Halfway to the State Tournament:
we are, July 5th, halfway throught the Delaware American Legion
Baseball season, with roughly 14 of our 28 games played by each team.
A few teams are behind due to All Star games, and the weather, but on
average everyone has played close to 14 league games. Now the season
heats up as the teams have cut their rosters to 18.
In the North, R.C. DuPont Post 18 has a one game lead over Durney Post
27 and Delaware Post 1. Half the division season is left, and nobody is
out of the race yet, even the 1-5 Delvets team plays hard and pounds
opponents if the pitching is a little off.
In the Central, Middletown Post 25 has a narrow lead over Stahl Post
30. Once again, nobody is out just yet. The surprise team is Newark
Post 10, who are fighting to claw their way
out of the cellar. There is a lot of talent on this team that you
would expect to step up as the State Tournament approaches. Then there
is the VFW 3420 who are battling back from some early season off field
The VFW is a very talented team with good pitching and power - they'll probably have a hand in deciding the Central.
And in the South, the big question is, "who is going to be able to beat Fox Post 2." At 6-0
(14-0 overall) Fox is rolling although their last few games have been
close. Fighting for the #2 spot in the division are Sussex East and
Sussex West, they play Tuesday night down at Indian River to see who
might get a leg on the season. Lewes (Spooner) Post 18 and Milford are
showing a lot of fight - they've played well enough to win, so far
their opponents have played just that much better.
So at the halfway point, you'd be hard pressed to predict the final 8
teams in the tournament, except that Fox Post 2 will be in as the host
team regardless of where they finish, but you ask the Fox Post 2
people, they expect to be one of the top 3 seeds.
Delvets at Fox Post 2:
