And Where things wound up Thursday Night:

Stanton Middle School:
Durney Post 27 - 7, DE Post 1 - 5: Durney Post 27 plays spoiler to Post 1. Looks like the North is coming down to the Delvets-R.C. game on Friday.

Silver Lake Park, Middletown:
Post 25 Middletown - 7, Stahl Post 30 - 6: The Firehawks take a commanding two game lead in the Central with on game left for them to play. Stahl still has a game with Post 10 on Saturday, but Post 10 has 3 games to make up, one with Stahl and two with VFW 3420.

In front of a progressively growing crowd of over 100 spectators, two hard-hitting teams battled under the lights at Silver Lake Field. Stahl jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning off of a three-run homer by Brandon Payne, but Post 25’s bats answered back in the second inning with solo shots by Ryan Haas and Eric Husni to help close the gap.  Stahl continued to battle, and put up a total of six runs after four innings.

With the score 6-4 in the fifth inning in favor of Stahl, Haas’ doubled, made it to third on a shortstop error, then scored after a fly ball was dropped.  With a runner on base, and the score 6-5, Ryan Gerlitz hit a shot over the left center field fence to put Post 25 up by a run. Post 25 retained the lead to win one of the most exciting games of the season.

Post 10 vs VFW 3420 - Rained out - Will Play Saturday afternoon.
Delvets at R.C. DuPont - Postponed to Friday at 6 PM
Post 3 Milford at Post 28 Warriors - Wet Grounds - cancelled

Where We Stand Thursday Morning:

1. Fox Post Clinches South. Fox Post 2 evened their record with the Post 28 Warriors with their 17-7 win Tuesday. With Post 6's 15-13 win over Post 28, Fox Post 2 secured the Southern Division Crown. Right now, Fox Post 2 is in line to be the top seed in the State Tournament.

2. Central comes down to Saturday: Post 25 has a game with Stahl Post 30 tonight which could bring Stahl into a tie for the lead in the Central Division although Post 25 has the tiebreaker over Stahl.

But that tie could be broken Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field - the site of Stahl's 10 run rule win over Post 10 back in the first game of the season as Stahl Post 30 takes on Post 10 Newark.

There are too many possibilities this Thursday morning, we'll have more after Friday (when Stahl takes on Northern Division's hot team, the Delvets)

3. Nobody wants to win the North: How about a 3 way tie for the lead right now, with two tiebreakers coming down to point allowed! Post 1 was leading, but they've let R.C. DuPont Post 18 and Delvets climb back into the chase. Post 1 is 2-2 with R.C. and holds a 3-1 record with the Delvets who hold a 3-0 record with Post 18. Confused?

RC plays Delvets tonight (Thursday) in the last game between the Northern leaders, while Post 1 meets up with Durney Post 27 in a game where Durney could play spoiler for Post 1's championship hopes.

An RC win and a Post 1 loss gives RC the crown. A Delvets win and a Post 1 loss still hands the title to Post 1. And the permutations go on and on...

What is important is that all these divisions races will be decided on the field in the next 3 days.

Wednesday's Games:

Wilmington Friends School:
Delvets - 3, Durney Post 27 - 2: Delvets got back into the win column in a well pitched and defensive game.

Durney scored once in the 4th and once in the 6th. Joyce pitched a complete game for Durney, while Shane Yost pitched 6 1/3 for the Win and Mike Reardon came in to pick up the save.

With the bases loaded in the 5th Mike Reardon hit a bases clearing double to give Delvets their offense. Catcher Mike Aleixo heads up play picked off the Durney runner at 3rd to end the game.

Seaford HS:

Post 6 Patriots - 15, Post 28 Warriors - 13: It almost seemed like halftime at a football game, with Post 6 leading Post 28 after 2 innings by a score of 12-10. But darkness fell over the Seaford HS Baseball Field on July 14th, and the game had to be finished later.

Last night, the game resumed. Korey Hearn took the mound for the Patriots, Jesse Swanson continued to pitch for the Warriors and for another inning it looked like both teams would continue to score.

Post 28 put up 2 more runs in the 3rd, on back to back doubles from Sean Lewis and Peter Ott. Ott scored on a Sac Fly by Kevin Guthrie.

But Post 6 came right back, taking advantage of a 1 out walk, plus singles by Casey Zitvogle and Paul Elliot, that set the table for Paul Elliot who singled in Jacob Williams, then Zach Reynolds' shot to the 2nd baseman who tried to turn a double play but couldn't. Two more runs scored, and that ended the scoring for the Patriots.

Hearn dug in and kept the Warriors off the board until Cameron Travalini reached on an error, then scored on Jesse Long's double leaving the scoreboard at 15-13..

The Warriors got a man to 2nd in the top of the 7th, but that was all.

Korey Hearn got the win, pitching 5 innings, striking out 5 and allowing just 2 earned runs. Jesse Swanson took the loss for the Warriors.

Milford forfeited to Post 25.

Tuesday Games:

North vs Central -
McKean HS:

Christiana HS:
Atterbury VFW 3420 - 10, Devets Post 1 - 9: The Delvets win streak came to a crashing halt with Andrew Reynolds' walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 7th with 1 out, winning the game for Atterbury VFW.

James McAllister had a 3 run homerun and Dennis Massari added a 2 run homerun and was 3 for 3 with 3 rbi's.  Brian Rowe had 2rbi's and Billy Sartin had a rbi for VFW.

Sam Manelski had a triple and  Dan Tiberi had a solo homer for Durney.

Silver Lake Park, Middletown:
R. C. DuPont Post 18 - 8, Post 25 Middletown Firehawks - 5:  Under the lights at Silver Lake Field, RC rallied early in the game to put up 7 unanswered runs, and maintained that lead through all 7 innings.

Nolan Magee allowed only 2 hits and no earned runs over 4 innings for RC, and Kip Skibicki had two doubles on the evening.  John Beal hit a double for Post 25, with two RBI’s.

South Division:
Reed Field, Wesley College, Dover:
Fox Post 2 - 17, Post 28 Warriors - 7 (6):

In a high scoring game Fox Post beat Post 28 17 to 7 in six innings. Dave Hopkins hit a grand slam and Steve Walker had a solo home run for Post 28.

For Fox Post Tony Gatto had two doubles, 5 rbis, Bryce Morrow 3 hits (one a double), Ethan Singleton 2 hits, 3 rbis, and Ronnie Rossi 2 hits and 3 run scores.

Danny Gatto was the winning pitcher for Fox Post 2 and had 7 K's in six inning.

Post 28 has two division games left - a continuation of a 12-10 game in Seaford Wednesday, and a game with Post 3 Milford at home on Thursday.

Milford Little League complex:
Post 3 Milford Red Sox - 13, Post 6 Patriots - 3 (6): Deja vu all over again as Milford scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th to beat the Patriots 13-3, the same score as last time the two teams met in Milford.

Milford's Matt Faulkner provided 5 RBIs, 3 on a Home Run to right in the 4th inning. Sam Grahovac doubled twice and Josh James once for the Sox. Devon Reed batted 4 for 4 and scored 3 times.

For the Patriots, Tyler Ruark and Paul Elliot both doubled. Ruark took the loss for Post 6, Denton Mow got the win in relief.

Final Week Preview:

Lots of important games this week -

In the South - Fox Post 2 hosts Post 28 Warriors in a game that could determine the South Champ.
Fox Post (8-3, 17-7) has a one game lead in the division, with only the game with Post 28 (7-2, 15-8) left. Post 28 wins tonight and the division comes down to an unfinished game at Post 6 (Post 6 leads 12-10 inthe 2nd) and a makeup game with Post 3 at home where the Warriors are hard to beat.
In the Central - The Post 25 Middletown Firehawks (7-3, 18-6) appear to be in firm control with only 2 divisional games left on the schedule.
But one of their final two games is against Stahl Post 30 (6-4, 18-5). Stahl is 0-3 against the Firehawks this year, but they've shown the ability to score runs fast. This game is under the lights at Silver Lake Park in Middletown. Expect the fireworks during the game.

Last year's State Champ, Post 10 Newark (6-3, 12-10) has had an up and down season, but they hold the tie-breaker over Post 25 having won 3 of the 4 games played between the clubs. If Stahl wins Thursday, Post 10 has a leg up, but they still have two games with Atterbury VFW 3420, then have to beat Stahl at Wilson Field on Saturday.

Either Atterbury VFW or Stahl can derail Post 10's drive for a top 3 seed which means Post 10 needs to win out in the division to grab the top spot from Post 25.
In the North - Delaware Post 1 needs to win their game with Durney Post 27 then wait to see how the rest of the division plays out.
Post 1 split the four games, 2-2, with the #2 team in the division - R.C. DuPont Post 18. If they are tied with Post 1 next Monday, the 2nd, and maybe 3rd tiebreaker may cut in.

But Post 1 still has to play a game against the dangerous Durney Post 27 on the fence-less Stanton Middle School field Thursday. Durney can still make the tournament, but they've got to beat Post 10 and the resurgent Delvets team before facing Post 1. If Durney beats all three, they could jump back up the point standings, and win their way into the State tournament.

Then there are the Delvets. Last year's runner up in the State Tournament was almost left for dead on the side of the standings, but since losing to Durney on July 9th, they've ripped off 6 straight wins, including 4 over their North Division foes. Delvets has division games remaining against both Durney and R.C. DuPont this week.If they win both, they can lock up a tournament bid for 2009.
So there you have it, a somewhat brief rundown of the races. We did an audit of all the games reported to date, and the numbers and rankings you see are what we've got.

The three divisional winners take the top 3 seeds in the State Tournament (ranked by overall points) followed by the next 5 teams in the point rankings. For the record, at least one 8th seeded team has won the State Tournament from the bottom seed. (Post 6 in 2005).

All you have to do is make the tournament, and win five games.

Post 25 Middletown Firehawks Move Tuesday/Thursday games:

Middletown Post 25 will be hosting two night games this week under the lights at Silver Lake Park, in Middletown:

  • Tuesday, July 21st, 7:30 pm (vs. RC duPont Post #18)

These are two critical games that will likely have an impact on overall standings for all teams involved.

So you like Close Races...

(From the Commish)

The Delaware American Legion Baseball League enters the last full week of play with each division leader only one game ahead of the team in 2nd place.

In the North, its even tighter, with DE Post 1 holding 5-5 record, and the remaining teams in the division with 4 wins each! This race could come down to the final weekend, next Saturday.

In the Central, Post 25 has a one game lead on Post 10, but Post 10 has the tiebreaker, having beaten Post 25 3 times this season.

And in the South, Fox Post is ahead by one game, but the Warriors still have to finish games with Post's 3 and 6.

Then there are the interdivisional games which are backed up to Sunday because of all the bad weather. This Saturday will open up some of the races, as the North plays each other today, but with games scheduled all next week, selecting this year's State Tournament participants will come down to the wire.
