Stahl batters got to Post 10's Derek Marshallsea for 5 runs in the bottom of the third, then blasted 6 more runs in the 4th to set the table for a 14-4 win Thursday night in the season opener for 2009 American Legion Baseball.
Delaware Department Commander Ruth McBride tossed out the ceremonial first pitch - and presented Post 10's returning vets their State Title pins. Post 10 also provided the colors for the opening. Then it was time for baseball.
Both teams scored a single run in the first as pitchers struggled with the wet conditions, but both teams stopped the scoring in the 2nd. Stahl came roaring back as Brendon Fallers, Brandan Payne and Zach Beaston all doubled with a single by Gabe DeAscanis in between. Another single from Jose Olivera drove in two more runs, and when it was over Stahl had batted around and scored 5 runs.
In the Bottom of the 4th, 3 back to back walks, followed by Tyler Fortuna's 2 run single started the scoring machine going again. two more walks, and a hit batsman set the stage for D.J. Wood's sac fly, and an error in center field allowed 2 more unearned runs to score.
As it was getting dark, a running error by Post 10's Kevin O'Connor led to a double play on a fly ball to right. A grounder to first ended that inning. But Stahl wasn't through - Gabe DeAscanis reached on a fielding error, then moved to 2nd on walk. Tyler Fortuna hit into a double play, but Alex Jeandell drove home DeAscanis, and an error followed by James Fallers' singled gave the Stahl team a 10 run edge, ending the game.
